East Jackson rallies past North Oconee for key 8-AA win

By staff reports
COMMERCE - East Jackson got two second quarter touchdowns to take the lead and then let the defense do the rest as the Eagles took a huge 18-10 win over North Oconee Friday night in Region 8-AA.

The win for the Eagles (8-0, 7-0 in region) moves them to within one win of clinching at least second place and homefield advantage in the Class AA state playoffs.

East Jackson will travel to Dawson County next week and then take on No. 3 Jefferson in two weeks in a showdown for the region title.

"Each week it gets a little more exciting," East Jackson coach Frank Caputo said. "Right now we're just focused on Dawson County. We're not even thinking about Jefferson yet."

East Jackson took the early lead on a 42-yard field goal by Nick Alvarado, his first of the season, but North Oconee (7-1, 6-1) grabbed the lead, 7-3, on a touchdown late in the first quarter.

But the Eagles finally got going. Deon Sewell capped a solid rive with a 5-yard scoring run to give East Jackson an 11-7 lead after a two-point conversion and then quarterback Evan Williamson connected with Cody Gibbs for a 40-yard touchdown pass to push the Eagles' lead to 19-7 midway through the second quarter.

After that, it was all defense from both teams. East Jackson limited North Oconee to just 37 total yards in the second half.
