The value of a technical education is the topic for the March 17 meeting of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce.
Guest speaker is Cynthia D. Brown, institutional advancement director for North Georgia Technical College (NGTC). The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at noon on the NGTC Currahee Campus on Ga. 17, and will include lunch and a tour of the facilities.
This year the Lavonia Chamber is designating a $500 scholarship for a Franklin County student to attend NGTC. Applications are available in the high school’s guidance office and must be completed by April 15.
Educators in Georgia’s technical college system stress that a qualified workforce is desperately needed for Georgia to be viable in the global economy.
Workers with specialized skills are urgently needed in industrial fields such as welding and machine tool technology. Today’s modern manufacturing plants are clean, climate-controlled, highly technical and safety-conscious. Education is the key to landing one of these well-paid, highly-skilled and interesting jobs.
NGTC offers courses in business, environmental services, health sciences, industrial technology, personal services, and transportation. Core curriculum hours transfer to other state colleges if a student wants to pursue a four-year degree.
Brown said NGTC students have the opportunity to remain in the community as new industry locates in the area and existing companies expand.
