The Georgia Senate on March 11 adopted a resolution praising Brenau University’s Department of Physical Therapy for both its dedicated service to students and the state as a whole.

Senate Resolution 1152 is co-sponsored by five state senators – District 49 Sen. Butch Miller (R-Gainesville); District 50 Sen. John Wilkinson (R-Toccoa); District 51 Sen. Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega); District 47 Sen. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville); and District 52 Sen. Chuck Hufstetler (R-Rome.)

“The Department is focused on helping students reach their highest potential to become the best entry-level therapists by providing a healthy blend of didactic and practical learning throughout the curriculum,” the resolution states. “Designed to accelerate and expand each student’s professional maturation through early immersion into dynamic, interdisciplinary clinical settings, the program provides students with learning environments and opportunities dedicated to the student's individual development as well as the advancement of the practice of physical therapy.”

Brenau’s first physical therapy cohort, consisting of about 40 students, began classes last year. Another 40 students are set to begin classes as part of the department’s second cohort in the three-year doctoral program this May.

Associate Professor Jim Lewis said the honor from state legislators cements Brenau University’s status as one of the region’s top incubators for emerging health science professionals.

“Brenau University in general and the Department of Physical Therapy in particular are addressing critical needs in our society,” Miller said. “This program improves the quality of life throughout northeast Georgia, for people of all ages.”
