Record low temperatures are being recorded across north Georgia in advance of the arrival of the remnants of Hurricane Irma this weekend.
Gainesville, Blairsville and Toccoa are among the places in the region reporting record lows for the date this morning.
It was 53 in Gainesville, breaking a record of 54 that had stood since 1953. In Blairsville, the low was 43. The old record was 59, which was set last year. Toccoa's one-year-old record low of 64 was also broken. It was 56 there this morning.
The National Weather Service says more record lows are possible tonight.
Irma, meanwhile, is expected to begin impacting parts of north Georgia, including Gainesville, Sunday night - in the form of heavy rains and strong winds - according to the latest projections.
Yesterday, the governors of Georgia and South Carolina issued emergency declarations as the two states braced for Irma's arrival. (See earlier story.)
