The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation department now offers therapeutic programs for kids with unique needs.
Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor Jeffery Jones said it's important to meet the needs of the community. He said the county, "...did do a survey and we're getting some response to that. We've gotten over 100 responses already and we're taking some real valuable information from the survey to help us design the programs that we're offering."
He says the first offering will be a summer camp program this year, which will host 20 kids each week during a five-week program. Since the program is a new offering for the department, Jones said there are limitations.
"Currently because of space and transportation issues, people who require the use of wheelchairs won't be eligible for our program because we don't have accessible transporation," Jones explained. Although, he said he expects that challenge to be temporary.
Registration for camp opens this week and Jones added that, "We are looking for a couple more staff members for our summer camp. We're always looking for instructors with a particular expertise that may or may not have experience working with people with disabilities."
He added that anyone needing help with the cost can apply for assistance through the Forsyth County Park Foundation.
