Once the Memorial Day weekend is over, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will begin replacement of faulty concrete on the Exit 14 overpass on I-985 in Hall County.
GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland said the driving surface on the bridge was tested earlier this year, and engineers discovered at that time the concrete did not reach "the comprehensive strength required" for construction.
Crews began removing the failed concrete in April, and reconstruction on sections of the overpass bridge will begin on Tuesday, May 28, according to Strickland.
Lane closures associated with the work will begin on the northbound side of I-985 on Friday, May 31 from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1. Northbound lanes will also be impacted from 9 p.m. June 1 until 9 a.m. Sunday, June 2, Strickland said.
The contractor will continue work Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The weekend work schedule will be from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Strickland said the rework on the bridge surface will take about 12 weeks.
