Community groups schedule events to commemorate 20th year since 9-11 attacks

By AccessWDUN staff

Saturday will mark the 20th anniversary of the terror attacks on the United States of America. Several events have been scheduled this week in commemoration of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.

If your community is holding an event, please email [email protected] and we will add the information to our report.

University of North Georgia

A remembrance ceremony has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 9 at 8:30 p.m. on the William "Lipp" Livsey Drill Field on the UNG-Dahlonega campus. The Student Government Association and the Corps of Cadets have organized the 2021 event, a continuation of a tradition that began as a spontaneous vigil held hours after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In addition, UNG will fly 20 American flags on the dining hall balcony during the week -  one to mark each year since the attacks - in honor of those who were killed.

Gainesville's Green Street

Two months ago, local banker Mickey Hyder began formulating the idea for what he is calling a "healing event" in memory of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001. Hyder has received commitments from several churches in Gainesville and Hall County to toll their bells Saturday at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Following the tolling of the bells, Hyder said there will be two minutes of silence and then trumpeters will play "Taps" up and down Green Street. He's asking citizens to line the sidewalks of the historic corridor in honor of those who were killed on that fateful day 20 years ago.

Hyder said the Gainesville Fire Department will bring the bell firefighters have used in past 9-11 ceremonies to the event on Green Street.

Memorial Park South Funeral Home

Members of Hall County Fire Services and the Hall County Sheriff's Office will participate in a 9-11 event at Memorial Park South Funeral Home on Saturday morning.

Shane Presgraves with Memorial Park South said the event is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

"We will begin with an invocation and welcome from Hall County Sheriff's Office Chaplain Donald McDuffie followed by words of reflection from Stoney Bowles, the Deputy Chief of Operations for Hall County Fire Services," Presgraves said. "The fire department Honor Guard will be present to lower the flag and play 'Taps.' Hall County 911 will be reading a scripted memorial across the emergency radio."

The service is open to the public.

Memorial Park South is located at 4121 Falcon Parkway in Flowery Branch.

Community Prayer Service

The organizers of Downtown Gainesville's Prayer on the Square each year have coordinated a 9-11 outdoor prayer service at Riverbend Church at 1715 Cleveland Highway north of Gainesville. Community members are encouraged to join together for a "call to prayer for our nation." The hour-long service begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The service will move indoors if weather is inclement.

Fowler Park in Forsyth County

The Forsyth County Fire Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office will honor first responders and remember the sacrifice of public service officials who died on Sept. 11, 2001 with a ceremony this Saturday at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the large picnic pavilion at the bottom of the open lawn hill. Fowler Park is located at 4110 Carolene Way.
