Girls playoff soccer: Commerce, Towns Co. seeking separate title match berths; LCA kicks off GAPPS playoffs

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

Commerce and Towns County both returned to the semifinals of the Georgia High School Association state soccer playoffs on Monday.

Only this time, they won't be playing each other for a spot in the finals. Commerce knocked off Towns County in last year's Class A Public semifinals. Both will get a separate chance for a championship game berth on Thursday.

(UPDATE: The Towns County game was moved to Friday at 6 p.m. due to weather.)

The top-ranked Lady Tigers (21-1) cruised into the Class A Division 1 Final 4 with a 10-0 thumping of Bleckley County on Monday in the quarterfinals. Ivey Tolbert continues to be a dominating force. The junior had 5 goals and 3 assists against Bleckley and now has 82 goals and 46 assists on the season.

Commerce will play host to third-ranked Mt. Vernon (13-2) looking for its second consecutive berth in the championship match. The Lady Tigers fell to Social Circle in last year's A Public title game.

Meanwhile, up the road in Hiawassee, Towns County (7-5-1) is coming off a 2-0 win over Hawkinsville on the road in Class A Division 2 on Monday to get back to the semifinal round. The Lady Indians (7-5-1) will travel to fellow Area 3-A D2 foe Lake Oconee Academy (11-6-1). LOA knocked off Towns County, 3-0, earlier in the season in their only other meeting this year.
