JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. — The Gainesville boys posted the second-lowest score of the day but it was not enough to overcome host Glynn Academy in the Class 6A golf finals on Tuesday.
The Red Elephants fired a solid 294 -- eight strokes better than their Day 1 total of 302 -- and got within three shots of the Terrors at one point. But they could not complete the comeback after starting the day nine shots back as Glynn Academy finished at 591 to Gainesville’s 596 on the Pine Lakes Course.
Brigham Ralston paced Gainesville with a two-day 147 after shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish fourth overall. Henry Kopydlowski also fired a 72 on Tuesday to close at 148 and a tie for seventh.
Shay Mangalat, who led Gainesville after the opening round, finished at 150 after a 76 on Tuesday, good for a tie for 11th. Colin Henderson shot a 74 in the second round to finish tied for 15th at 151.
In Class 3A, the White County girls, playing at Maple Ridge Golf Course in Columbus, finished second with a two-day total 540. The Lady Warriors finished 52 shots behind Savannah Christian, which won the title with a 488 finish.
Meanwhile, Dawson County's Samantha Dawson's DeWendt finished third after shooting a 79 for a two-day 149. DeWendt finished behind winner Mary Miller of Savannah Christian, who shot a 137. Kate Barber of Savannah Country Day took second with a 141.
The North Hall girls started their day in fourth place in Class 4A and finished there with a two-day total of 526. However, at one point the Lady Trojans had climbed to second behind eventual winner North Oconee, who captured the title with a 501, nipping Westminster by a shot (502) after starting the day four back.
Lillie Mallis led North Hall, finishing seventh overall with a two-day total of 164.
​Back to Class 6A, the Habersham Central girls improved by 22 strokes from the first round to the second, shooting a 273 to finish eighth overall on the Indian Mounds Course. Addie Maney paced the Lady Raiders with 172 total after also improving by 10 shots with an 81 on Tuesday.
In Class 5A, the Jefferson boys finished 12th after a rough two days at Cartersville Country Club.
In Class 7A, the Buford boys finished 11th.
