Collision in Forsyth County kills a motorcycle rider; Gainesville car operator faces charges

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Forsyth County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a Gainesville man behind a fatal motor vehicle crash overnight.

Sheriff Ron Freeman's office says 35-year-old Colt Spencer faces first-degree motor vehicle homicide, DUI and other motor vehicle charges behind the crash that claimed the life of 53-year-old motorcyclist Timothy Cantrell of Cleveland.

Officials say Spencer was travelling along Waldrip Road at State Route 369 at around 8:45 p.m. and crashed while attempting to turn his Hyundai Sonata onto State Route 369, and struck the motorcycle of Cantrell.

Detectives say Cantrell was pronounced dead shortly upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

Spencer was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, but after being medically cleared by hospital staff, was placed under arrest and charged with Homicide by Vehicle 1st Degree, DUI and Failure to Yield.

He was then transported to the Forsyth County Jail and remained in custody, as of earlier today.

The case remains under investigation.
