Mirant posts $30 million profit but warns that 2002 to be weak

ATLANTA - Mirant Corporation reduced its profit forecast for 2002 a second time Wednesday. The Atlanta-based energy company reported fourth-quarter earnings that were hampered by a 66 (m) million dollar exposure to bankrupt Enron. <br> <br> Mirant said net income was 30 (m) million dollars, or nine cents per share, in the fourth quarter. That included 66 (m) million in charges from debt Enron owes the company and a three (m) million dollar gain from selling an investment in Chile. <br> <br> Excluding those items, Atlanta-based Mirant earned 93 (m) million, or 27 cents per share. That met the forecast of analysts. <br> <br> In its report after the markets closed, Mirant said it expects to earn a dollar-60 to one-seventy per share this year. Last month, the company revised down its 2002 earnings forecast to a dollar-ninety to two dollars per share.
