ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Low-fare carrier AirTran Airways will begin offering round-trip, daily flights in March from Rochester to its biggest hubs in Baltimore and Atlanta.

Gov. George Pataki said Wednesday the new service will amount to "a home run for the upstate economy" by helping businesses led by Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp. and making the Rochester region "an even more attractive place to live, work and raise a family."

AirTran currently has departures from 36 cities throughout the eastern United States.

The airline said it will offer discounted fares from Rochester to Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport priced at just over $200. It will also fly at least once daily between Rochester and Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

AirTran offered service between Rochester and Orlando, Fla., from February 1996 to August 1998.

Another low-fare carrier, JetBlue Airways, has been offering flights at the Rochester airport since August 2000.
