Company spokesman David Blumenthal said the year-end surge was spurred by promotional offers and aggressive marketing aimed at switching cable modem users to DSL.

The company's DSL service is available to 70 percent of residents in its nine-state region. Atlanta-based BellSouth plans to have DSL accessible in 76 percent of the region by November.
