DAWSONVILLE - Dawson County commissioners have moved to halt plans by Georgia Power to erect two high power transmission lines in the county.

Commissioners, citing the county's zoning ordinance, say Georgia Power must go through the zoning process in order to place the lines outside areas now zoned for such facilities.

The lines are planned in a 260-foot, 12-mile corridor through Dawson and Lumpkin counties. Georgia Power has run into a storm of opposition in both counties.

The utility giant says the lines are needed to meet the electricity needs of the growing northeast Georgia area.
