GAINESVILLE - A nearly 50-bed addition to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center is in the works.

The medical center has filed a Certificate-of-Need with the state for the addition of 43 acute-care beds to the main campus in Gainesville, which hospital officials say would serve the short-term needs of the medical center.

"That's a number we can support through the Certificate-of-Need process," said medical center spokeswoman Cathy Bowers. "You have to be able to...demonstrate that there is an immediate need for that in the community."

Bowers says the medical center continues to ponder the addition of a patient tower to the main campus or construction of a new hospital near Flowery Branch.
