GAINESVILLE - Gainesville will host one of a series of statewide forums on domestic violence Thursday.

The session will be held at the Georgia Mountains Center from 9 a.m. until noon. It will feature a panel representing law enforcement, intervention professionals, and survivors of domestic violence.

Eight meetings are being held around the state, sponsored by the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) Division of Family and Children Services. The purpose is to "explore the issues surrounding the causes of domestic violence, solutions to stopping the violence, and giving the community an opportunity to be heard," according to DHR spokeswoman Elizabeth Wilson.

DHR cites statistics showing more than 60,000 calls were made to domestic violence crisis lines in Georgia in 2001; shelter was provided nearly 3,800 adults and 3,800 children that year; and the GBI reported in 2000 that law enforcement officers responded to nearly 60,000 incidents of family violence.

Nationwide, one in four women reports an incidence of abuse by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
