AINESVILLE - Gainesville's missing James Longstreeet marker should be back in place by the first of May.

The marker, which had stood for years in downtown Gainesville in honor of the Confederate general who made his home in Gainesville after the Civil War, was discovered missing several weeks ago.

Longstreet Society President Richard Pilcher of Gainesville says the marker was removed from Roosevelt Square by the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for repairs to a fracture, and for welding, stripping, and refinishing.

Pilcher says DNR has told him the work is taking a bit longer than usual because "the stripping equipment they use for (such work) is down and waiting on a parts shipment."

He adds that DNR hopes to have the marker back in place around the first of May.
