WASHINGTON, GEORGIA - The state patrol in Washington, Georgia, Tuesday confirmed the death of a 22-year-old Gainesville woman in a traffic accident in Oglethorpe County over the weekend.

Radio operator Jadrian Carnes said Katie Hatfield was killed early Saturday when the SUV in which she was a passenger wrecked on Georgia 10/U.S. 78.

Carnes said the vehicle ran off the road, the driver overcorrected, and the SUV flipped over.

Carnes said Hatfield, the daughter of Fieldale Farms vice-president Joe Hatfield and the granddaughter of Joe S. Hatfield, chairman of the poultry company's board of directors, died when she was thrown from the overturning vehicle.

Carnes said he had no information on the driver or any charges that have been filed or are pending. He said the investigation of the accident is incomplete. There are reports that a Gainesville man was driving the vehicle and that he faces a number of charges, including DUI.

A "celebration of life" is planned for Hatfield Wednesday night from 6:00 until 8:00 at Hillside Memorial Chapel in Clarkesville.
