GAINESVILLE - Although the 2003 Northeast Georgia Medical Center Open Golf Tournament benefiting Challenged Child and Friends is just around the corner, plans are in the works to select a beneficiary for the 2004 tournament.

"We are starting now to begin the process of selecting the beneficiary of the proceeds of next year's Medical Center Open, which will take place in October of 2004," says Nancy Colston, Executive Director of The Medical Center Foundation. "By selecting the next beneficiary now, we will position ourselves to work on the 2004 tournament right after this year's tournament ends."

The Medical Center Open beneficiary is determined by the Executive Committee of the Development Council of The Medical Center Foundation, a voluntary body made up of community leaders who raise funds on behalf of The Medical Center Foundation.

The Development Council is chaired by local attorney W. Woodrow Stewart. Under Stewart's leadership, The Medical Center Foundation raised $8 million in its recent Healthy Journey Campaign. And since 1997, over $650,000 has been given back to the community through proceeds from The Medical Center Open Golf Tournament.

Applicants for the 2004 Medical Center Open Beneficiary should be non-profit agencies who have a project in need of funding that is focused on improving the physical health of the community. Funds raised for this project will be available in October 2004. Requests should range from $90,000 to $150,000. The golf tournament goal is typically $100,000.
An information session will be held at The Medical Center Foundation office on Limestone Parkway Friday, September 12 at 10 a.m. Interested organizations are invited to send a representative.

A one-page letter of interest is required, and it must be received by The Medical Center Foundation office by 5 p.m. on Monday, October 6.

In the letter of interest, applicants are asked to outline:

*the mission of the agency;

*a description of project to be funded, including the purpose of the project;

*the amount being requested for the project (including full budget detail);

*the target audience and number of Gainesville-Hall County citizens expected to be reached;

Applicants will also be asked to describe how their project will improve health and quality of life, why their need is strong and compelling and why they believe their project would have community appeal. In other words, why would a community member want to give money to this project?

Projects must be specific and tangible, and have a strong focus on physical health.

For an application and criteria information, go to www.nghs.com, or contact Christy Moore, Director of Community Benefit, at (770) 533-8099.
