GAINESVILLE - The South Hall woman who was shot by Hall County sheriff's deputies in her Cash Road home early Tuesday morning emphatically denies that she pointed a gun at the officers.

Julie Elder said in an e-mail to AccessNorthGa.com that she "would just like to set the record straight."

"According to the GBI, the shooting was a direct result of my pointing a gun at a police officer -- this is not accurate," Elder wrote. "Two police officers came up my front stairs and into the hallway where I was positioned 'indian style' on the floor in front of my daughter's bedroom door."

She says her gun, held by her right hand, was on the floor in front of her. "When I saw (that) it was the police - I felt immediate relief and began to cry. Both officers had guns and were pointing them in my direction as they rounded the top of the stairs."

Elder says she had "let go of my gun" and raised her hands to wipe her tears.

"I heard one of the officers say to the other 'she has a gun.' Hearing this he fired, yelling 'drop your weapon', "she said.

"I want to make my position clear: I never pointed my gun at either police officer in my home that night."

Elder suffered a minor wound to one shoulder, according to the GBI report. She was treated at the scene by EMTs.

The GBI report, which was released Tuesday afternoon, says the officers entered Elder's Cash Drive home after repeated attempts to contact her from outside where they had arrested a man they found in her driveway.

"Elder was pointing a gun at the deputies," Clayton GBI agent Mike Clayton said Tuesday afternoon. "A deputy fired a shot and Elder suffered a very minor wound in the shoulder."

The man who was found outside the house was subsequently charged with criminal trespass.
