LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County officials will ask the state for permission to discharge another 9 million gallons a day of treated wastewater into the Chattahoochee River - a move tied to legal battle over Lake Lanier, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

If the request is denied, Gwinnett could end up with more sewage that it can treat, which could adversely impact new development in the county and increase the use of septic tanks.

Environmental watchdogs are wary of Gwinnett's request.

The state Supreme Court is set to rule by year's end whether Gwinnett can discharge 40 million gallons of treated wastewater a day into Lanier from a new sewage treatment plant scheduled to open in early 2006.
