GAINESVILLE - A rising senior at Brenau University who is from Gainesville is the winner of a $5,000 scholarship.

Amanda Pilcher was chosen recently from a statewide pool of 25 candidates as the 2004-05 HomeBanc Community Service Scholarship recipient.

Criteria for the award included being a rising senior who exemplifies student leadership, demonstrates a commitment to the community and/or campus service, has a grade point average of 2.5 or above and a need for financial aid that would be weighed in the selection process.

Pilcher's service to community and to campus is verifiable just by the list of offices she holds in Brenau campus organizations. She is president of her sorority; treasurer of the senior class; vice-chair justice of Honor Court; secretary of Rho Lambda service honor society; a member of the Order of Omega service and academic honor society; and a member of H.G.H. Senior Honor Society. She does all this while carrying a 3.2 GPA as a history/political science major and a legal studies minor.

HomeBanc chose the Georgia Foundation of Independent Colleges (GFIC) to help select the candidate and administer the award. Each of GFIC's 28-member institutions was invited to nominate up to three students for the award. Helen Ray, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs, nominated Pilcher and Karen Proulx, community life and volunteer center coordinator wrote the recommendation.

"The selection committee was impressed with her qualifications and her commitment to community and campus service," said Katrina Graham, vice president of GFIC. "Those qualifications and commitment of service to others are a lesson for all of us."

Pilcher says the scholarship money has made a huge difference in her life. "It means I can save money for law school," she said.
