CORNELIA - New York has its "big ball drop" and Atlanta the "peach drop" to ring in the new year each year - and now Cornelia is getting in on the act.

The Habersham County town will be ringing in the new year Saturday night with the 2nd Annual Cornelia Apple Drop.

The event will take place at midnight at the historic depot in downtown Cornelia.

The apple used in the Apple Drop is a replica of the 5,200-pound apple that sits atop the Big Red Apple monument at the depot. According to the town's Web site, the monument pays homage to the apple and the apple growers in Habersham County.

Preliminary events get underway at 9:30, but people will be admitted to the area - free of charge - starting at 9:00. The first 100 people in line will get free commemorative T-shirts. Organizers suggest you bring lawn chairs.
