GAINESVILLE - The retiring Corps of Engineers Colonel who oversees Lake Lanier said Saturday the lake is full and the U.S. is winning in Iraq.

Colonel Robert B. Keyser, Army Corps of Engineers Mobile, Alabama, District commander, told Lake Lanier Association members national media reports don't tell the story of U.S. presence in Iraq.

"And despite all the crap that you read in the newspaper and you see on the nightly news, we're winning over there," Keyser said.

Keyser said several of his people had performed life saving engineering services while serving in Iraq and in district headquarters in Mobile.

Keyser said Lake Lanier is full despite the driest March in 200 years.

"Lake Lanier is full, West Point Lake is full, Walter F. George is full and Lake Seminole is full," Keyser said.

He said Lanier is at 1070.8 (feet above sea level). Full pool is 1071.

Keyser said lowering the level of the lake 15-20 feet to meet tri-state river compact demands would be a disaster.
Seven U.S. Senate candidates also appeared at the meeting, each promising to work for lower gasoline prices and search for alternative fuels.
Mary Squires, Johnny Isakson, Jim Finkelstein, Mac Collins, Allen Buckley, Leigh Baier and Al Bartell gave statements and fielded questions during the meeting.
