GAINESVILLE - Officers with American CBI Ltd. and Endeco International have withdrawn the zoning application for The Canterbury on Lake Lanier with plans to resubmit the request at a later date.

Plans for the twin-tower complex - one tower 36 stories tall, the other 34 - ran into opposition in a number of circles when they were first revealed several months ago.

"The community meetings we hosted in March generated several questions from area citizens. We feel those concerns need to be reviewed and addressed by our team," said Eric Castro, Endeco International principal.

The application was scheduled to go before the Gainesville Planning and Appeals board next Tuesday. According to city regulations, the earliest that the application can be resubmitted is in six months.

"Additional factors in making the decision to withdraw our application are related to the great detail required by government entities in reviewing a project of this magnitude," Castro added. "We want to make sure that every question is thoroughly addressed before going into the formal application and review process."

The proposed project is a $325 million condominium and six-star boutique hotel development, planned off Thompson Bridge Road near Holly Park. The two-tower development also features restaurants, high-end retail shops, a banquet hall and numerous other amenities.

Endeco International is financing The Canterbury at Lake Lanier in collaboration with American CBI Ltd. of Georgia.
