GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Mayor George Wangemann said Thursday he would not support a business/occupation tax hike.

City Council received an analysis and fee proposal from Finance Services with a minimum nine dollar a year increase for one employee businesses.

"A business license tax will hit the goose that lays the golden egg, those are our businesses and industries," Wangemann said.

City Manager Bryan Shuler said the fee study was more for information than for serious consideration.

Councilman Bob Hamrick said he wanted to look at an alternative to raising property tax to increase city revenue and the business/occupation tax has not changed in ten years.

FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER

A delegation representing the Edmondson-Telford Center for Children asked Gainesville City Council members today (Thursday) to consider providing land for a new Family Justice Center.

Hall County District Attorney Jason Deal said such a center could provide a "one stop shop" for abuse victims.

"We'd love it if the city had a place that they could set up as a campus, that we could lease or purchase, however that would work," Deal said.

Deal said a grant application could bring $1.2-million but those funds would be ear marked for training and equipment.

Deal added that the center would need to hold several different service offices in one building, preferably in or close to downtown Gainesville.
