DRAINAGE & SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS
Also Thursday, council agreed to approve Eisenach's request for $330,000 for downtown drainage and sidewalk improvements on West Academy and Washington streets.
RE-CREATING MIDTOWN
Gainesville City Council looked at how a mid-town overlay zone could create a "live, work and play" environment for downtown.
Planning consultant Gary Cornell said the goal is to attract developers by creating more housing, employment and recreation by allowing people to live close to where they work.
"Loft dwelling town houses and apartments would be permitted by right in the office, commercial and residential district," Cornell said.
Cornell said attracting residential development is the key to bringing buying power to mid-town.
The Mid-Town Overlay Zone is the area bounded by Jesse Jewell Parkway, Queen City Parkway, Northfolk-Southern Railroad and Butler Parkway.
