JEFFERSON - Jackson County School Superintendent Andy Byers "categorically denies" that the school system is banning "anything religious" related to Christmas from its schools this year.

Byers was responding to allegations by the Alliance Defense Fund which says it is acting on behalf of a teacher at Benton Elementary School.

Byers, who was out of town Friday and unavailable for comment, told the the Jackson Herald this week the school system isn't doing anything different this year.

He says contrary to what the ADF claims, there's no ban on teachers saying "Merry Christmas," it's okay to refer to "Christmas parties," and that the only mention of apparel concerns the wearing of religious slogans, such as "Jesus is the reason for the season."
