Cagle, 39, was first elected to the Senate in 1994. He says he will begin his campaign with an event in Gainesville after the legislative session.
Cagle becomes the first GOP candidate in the race to succeed Lieutenant Governor Mark Taylor -- an Albany Democrat who is running for governor.
Cagle says he is at a place in his career where he feels he can run.
Under Georgia law, Cagle cannot raise funds until the end of the legislative session. He said that he would continue to serve in the Senate while he campaigns.
Cagle is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
Sen. Chip Pearson of Dawsonville will serve as his campaign manager and State Rep. James Mills of Gainesville, campaign treasurer.
