ATLANTA - The state plans to offer cancer and chronic disease prevention information in two northeast Georgia towns next week in connection with Tour de Georgia.

The state Department of Human Resources is taking its Live Healthy Georgia Expo to five stops along the bicycle race route, including Dahlonega on Friday and Towns County Saturday.

The Expo will focus on five components DHR says are for good health and well-being: Be Active, Eat Healthy, Be Smoke-Free, Get Checked and Be Positive.

The Tour de Georgia begins Tuesday in Augusta.

The Expo will highlight the recently launched "Live Healthy Georgia" campaign, a partnership between the Governor's Office and DHR.
The Dodge Tour de Georgia (Dodge Tour) is North America's premier, professional cycling event.

"Being able to work closely with DHR allows both groups to spread the good news about cancer - that it can be preventable and that it can be very effectively treated with early detection," sail Bill Todd, president and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
"Our focus on cancer prevention is unshakable, and it makes good sense for us to work with the GCC in making the Live Healthy Georgia Expo available to everyone," said DHR acting director of public health, Stuart Brown, M.D. "Our organizations are committed to getting the message out to Georgians about cancer awareness."

The Expo includes a variety of interactive, health-focused booths to provide spectators with cancer and chronic disease prevention information.

The Live Healthy Georgia Expo Hunt is an educational game that will encourage youth to learn more about healthy living by gathering health information and resources at the Expo booths. Children who finish the Hunt and submit their entry form to the DHR booth will receive a prize and be entered into a grand prize drawing to win a brand new bicycle. DHR and GCC physicians, scholars and specialists will be on-hand at the Expo to offer cancer prevention and awareness resources. The Expo also will give spectators an opportunity to sign banners in loving memory of those who died from cancer and for cancer survivors.

When the race concludes in Alpharetta on Sunday, April 24, Commissioner B.J. Walker and Bill Todd, president and CEO of the Georgia Cancer Coalition, will unveil the signed banners from each of the Dodge Tour finish cities. Last year more than 200,000 signatures were gathered.
