GAINESVILLE - The 46th year of Northeast Georgia Health System's Teen Volunteer Program kicked off recently with a record number of volunteers this summer - and hospital officials had to halt the sign-ups in March.

The 107 volunteers will be working at the Health System's two hospital campuses - Northeast Georgia and Lanier Park - and at its other local facilities.

"We have been very excited by the response to our teen volunteer program this year,"says April Sanderson, teen volunteer coordinator. "We were full this year by March with an extensive waiting list."

In order to be accepted into the Teen Volunteer Program, teens must have passing grades, a teacher recommendation and high standards of behavior.

Teen volunteers serve in over 25 service areas including the Main Campus, Lanier Park Campus, New Horizons North, New Horizons West, local Neighborhood Healthcare Centers, the Imaging Center and the Rehabilitation Institute at Sherwood Plaza. Typical duties include delivering patient meals, transporting patients, assisting with office work and assisting with mail delivery and other non-medical duties. Ten adult volunteers also serve on the Medical Center Auxiliary's Teen Volunteer Committee, which is co-chaired by Charlotte Kaufman and Leslie Novotny.

This year's group of teen volunteers includes a foreign exchange student from Korea. Seung Tack Baek, an eleventh grade student at East Hall High School, says he is volunteering so he can "have an American experience this summer."
