ATLANTA - One of three public hearings on the Georgia Deprtment of Transportation's (GDOT) 30-year plan will be held in Commerce Thursday.

The hearing is scheduled for two hours starting at 5:00 at the Commerce Civic Center and is the only one planned in North Georgia.

The others will be held in Moultrie and Savannah.

At each session, GDOT will present the statewide transportation needs over the next 30 years in all modes of transportation including highways, transit, air, water, bicycle and pedestrian.

"The Statewide Transportation Plan (SWTP) is a critical planning tool used to forecast our transportation needs financially and by modes," said State Planning Engineer Joe Palladi. "This is where the public can have the most impact on our transportation system, as this is the beginning of the transportation planning process. By attending and commenting at these meetings, you play a vital role in the decision of what modes of transportation will be funded and used in the future. This is the time to show up and make a difference!"

Palladi said in 2035, if there were no improvements on state roads, almost 75% of the vehicle miles traveled will be under congested conditions. He says more than $26 million will be needed annually through 2035 just to maintain existing rural transit services, and an estimated $3.8 billion annually is needed over the next 30 years to maintain, preserve and upgrade all of the state, city and county roadways.
