WASHINGTON - The federal government's Wild Horse & Burro Program is coming to Gainesville for the first time ever next week.

The program, administered by the Department of the Interior, says it has successfully adopted thousands of animals across the U.S. since 1973.

It will be in Gainesville July 15-17 at the Chicopee Ag Center.

The animals will be available for viewing on the 15th with the actual adoptions - through a lottery of qualified applicants - taking place the other two days.

To qualify, prospective adopters must have sturdy corrals at least six feet high for horses and five feet for burros and horses 18 months or younger, shelter, transportation, and the means of caring for the animal. The adoption fee will be determined by competitive bid, with the minimum bid being $125 per animal.
