Two-wheelers coming to town

GAINESVILLE - Two-wheelers will descend Hall County next weekend for two annual racing events - one at break-neck speeds at Chestnut Mountain, and the other at a dramatically slower pace in downtown Gainesville.

The second annual Downtown Gainesville Grand Prix will be be run Saturday night - featuring the fastest ProAm cycling teams from around the southeast, racing through a tight course around the square.

The events begin at 3:00 with the Kid's Zone, featuring a climbing wall, moonwalk, games, and face painting.

Streets will close at 5:00 and the races begin at 5:30 with the Beginners category. At 6:30, there will be a free kids' race down the straightaway of Washington Street, the same course the Pros will race later in the evening.

The main event of the night will be the ProAm race at 9:00. The course will follow the same route as last year, with the Start/Finish at the square on Washington Street. The racers will then take two quick right turns onto Bradford Street and then Spring Street for the long straightaway down the other side of the square, before two more quick right turns onto Academy Street and then back to Washington Street.

The Downtown Gainesville Grand Prix is a part of the MAXXIS Georgia Cup, which is a season-long bicycle racing series hosted by several cities around the state. Teams from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, North and South Carolina are expected for the Gainesville.

MOTORCYCLES

Starting Friday and continuing through Sunday, it's two-wheelers of another variety, at another level of speed in another part of the county.

Bill as the "biggest two-wheel event of the season," the Suzuki Superbike Showdown makes a stop at at Road Atlanta at Chestnut Mountain.

The 2.54-mile course was the first track to host an American Motorcycle Association doubleheader and track officials say that tradition will continue Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with SuperBike championship events both Saturday and Sunday.
