It begins September 6 and about 25 people will meet for three hours a night, twice-a-week for seven weeks.
Capt. Ramone Gilbert, head of HCSO's Court Services Division, is program director for the academy.
"This promises to be a fun program," said Capt. Gilbert. "We intend to show citizens the full workings of the Sheriff's Office." Program highlights include ride-alongs with uniformed officers, weapons familiarization including range firing, tours of the Courthouse, jail and law-enforcement center, K-9 demonstrations of bomb and drug detection, SWAT team familiarization and crime-scene investigations.
"This is a comprehensive program in which every division of HCSO will participate. It provides a real opportunity for citizens to meet and interact with the Sheriff's command staff."
Citizens wishing to attend the academy are encouraged to contact Jennifer Moore, HCSO Court Services Division senior secretary, at (770) 531-7096. Capt. Gilbert noted that space is limited for the free academy, and community sponsorships are welcome.
