GAINESVILLE - A former Army Ranger and paratrooper who is now Gainesville's Deputy City Marshal received the Meritorious Service Award from the city Tuesday.

Chief City Marshall Chuck Smith presented the award to Gary Kansky, who was recognized for rescuing an injured Jet Ski operator after a July 22 collision on Lake Lanier.

"I'm awarding you this department's Meritorious Service Award for your life saving actions and for a job well done," Smith said.

According to Smith Kansky performed the rescue despite a back injury suffered in a parachute jump while in the Army.

Mayor and Council, City Manager Bryan Shuler, his department head Melody Marlowe and Fire Chief Dick Taylor thanked Kansky.

"Gary's a true hero," Chief Taylor said.

"It goes beyond this, this is just a recognition of the type of individual he is and that we have in the City of Gainesville."
