Bert and Elaine Levitt of 630 Ridgewood Avenue left the meeting upset after the Commission unanimously denied their request to replace asphalt shingles with the metal roof, which they said was historically authentic.
Commission members said the metal roof was inconsistent with historic district material guidelines.
As she left Elaine Levitt said she intended to appeal the Commission's decision to City Council.
ADDRESSING GUIDELINES
Norton Agency President Frank Norton Junior told Gainesville Historic Preservation Commission members that Green Street business property owners want better historic district design and construction guidelines.
Norton said those guidelines need a comprehensive section that deals exclusively with businesses.
"We're willing to roll up our sleeves and make it a better document to get rid of the inconsistencies that we see are out there," Norton said.
Commission members said they wanted to partner with the Green Street group and create a united vision for historic preservation.
Norton and other Green Street property holders were opposed to the guidelines, which were approved by City Council in June.
