GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Mayor George Wangemann says he would like to get rid of the city's "petition requirement" to run for office.

Candidates for the city council and city school board have to get a petition signed by fifty registered voters in their district.

"There are more people than we know of who are not registered to vote, so you can waste a lot of time going door to door," Wangemann said.

The Mayor added that Gainesville is one of only seven cities in Georgia with the petition requirement for seeking office.

Wangemann is running unopposed in this year's elections.
