GAINESVILLE - Last November, the Hall County YMCA mailed out more than 50 internship applications to Hall County and Gainesville High Schools in search of two interns - and the first has been chosen. The Internship program ready to start this year would allow Juniors and Seniors to apply for a paid internship working in various YMCA programs. The first to join the YMCA team is Cody Marlowe of North Hall High School.

Cody is the son of Mike and Melody Marlowe of Clermont. He is the lead singer and guitar player for the newly formed youth praise band "Refuge" at Trinity United Methodist Church of Clermont off Clarks Bridge Road. Cody applied for the opportunity with encouragement from his parents and friends. Cody has demonstrated an interest in working with youngsters both in his church and previous work for the Y.

"I developed this internship program to work specifically with high school students in an effort to encourage their interest in a career with Human Service organizations," said Mike Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Hall County YMCA. "Cody was an easy choice for our YMCA. Not only have I seen him grow into the fine young man he is today but he offers a hard work ethic, great sense of humor and a proven track record as a leader in the many activities he has been apart of these past several years."

The Hall County YMCA is currently involved in a plan to build a facility in the City of Gainesville off 365/985 and Howard Road. Plans for the YMCA's first facility break ground in early Spring 2006. The YMCA has received $4.1 million dollars in the first capital campaign which will assist in the overall funding of the $8 million dollar facility. Cody will work directly with Mike and YMCA Sr. Staff by assisting with projects such as Health & Wellness, marketing, business management, human resources, after-school and sports programs and the opportunity to work hands on with the YMCA's first building project.

"Cody has already started his first project and makes his first presentation to the Board of Directors this Thursday at 4:00PM," said Geoff Chaffin, YMCA Marketing Director. "I believe that Cody's presentation will assist us with making the right decision in selecting our fitness equipment by comparing programs across the country. Cody has been working on this project these past 6 weeks and will make recommendations on who should be given a contract for our fitness equipment purchase." Cody's recommendation would provide purchasing equipment from two companies utilizing $250,000 dollars in capital funding.

The YMCA is still seeking its second candidate for the Internship Program and plans to make decisions in the next 60 days. Applicants must apply at the YMCA and interview for the job with Executive Director and CEO, Mike Brown. The internship covers a weekly stipend plus expenses and is renewed every 90 days based on performance.

"Should Cody choose to stay with the YMCA throughout his college years he will be offered opportunities for employment and receive scholarships to assist with college expenses," said Brown. "I am eager to get our final intern candidate and look forward to finding someone comparable to Cody's qualifications and energy". Brown spoke that he has known Cody for several years and could not ask for a better student to work with him in the organization. "I have been working with high school students for the past 10 years and rarely find one with the energy, humor and excitement for life that Cody offers". "His parents and church should be proud of the young man he is becoming", said Brown.
