A suspected serial killer, who is believed to have murdered an elderly Barrow County woman in 1998, has a date with the excutioner.

Angel Maturino Resendiz is scheduled to be put to death in May by the state of Texas.

Resendiz is a suspect in the death of Fannie Whitner Byers, 81, who was killed in her home in Barrow County eight years ago. Byers lived near a set of railroad tracks. Resendiz, who has been linked to or charged with more than a dozen murders is six states, all near rail lines, has, however, not been tried for Byers' death.

The Texas Supreme Court in 2003, in a 7-2 decision, affirmed his May 2000 conviction and death sentence for the Dec. 17, 1998, rape-slaying of Dr. Claudia Benton, a Houston-area medical researcher.

Defense lawyers hired by the Mexican government objected to setting an execution date while the appeals process contnued, but prosecutors said there's no reason the appeals can't continue.

The date chosen for the execution coincides with Mother's Day in Mexico.
