GAINESVILLE - A Canadian couple is the new coaching team for the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club.

Dave and Devri Robertson are from Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up at the Wascana Kayak Club in Regina. Connie Hagler, LCKC executive director, said both have "strong competitive paddling experience in canoe as well as kayak" and met and grew up at the Wascana Kayak Club in Regina.

"They played a large part in developing a very successful program at Wascana,' Hagler said. "Dave is a Level 3 Certified Sprint Canoe Kayak Coach in Canada. He started coaching in 1996 and has experience coaching at the club, provincial, national and international levels in Canada. Most recently, Dave placed 4 Junior women on the Canadian 2005 Junior World Championships team."

Hagler said all four of his athletes qualified for the A Finals and finished in the top 8 in Szeged, Hungary. "His coaching skills produced the best performances in history for both Team Saskatchewan Canoe-Kayak at the 2005 Canada Summer Games and for Wascana Canoe Club at the 2005 Canadian Canoe Association Sprint Championships."

Devri managed crew training and coach recruitment for 80 Dragon Boat Crews at the 2005 Regina Dragon Boat Festival. "We look forward to developing a thriving Dragon Boat program through her leadership," Hagler said. "Devri also has strengths in administration and equipment management."

The Robertsons will replace Guy and Shelley Wilding who resigned last fall so Shelley could begin training for the 2008 Olympics. Jim O'Dell has been serving as interim coach.
