GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville State College Foundation has established a scholarship program designed to encourage careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the school.

Selected recipients will receive a $200 book scholarship each semester from the foundation for up to six semesters.

While many students enter college with the HOPE Scholarship, it is often a challenge to keep HOPE while majoring in academically rigorous science/technology/engineering/mathematics (STEM) programs, according to college officials. With the STEM Scholarship, they say these students have the support and assistance needed to help them remain in these disciplines.

Selected STEM Scholarship recipients will receive a $200 book scholarship each semester from the Gainesville State College Foundation for a maximum of six semesters as long as they make progress in their chosen STEM major and remain HOPE-eligible.

For those students who lose their HOPE Scholarship after their first year, but continue to make progress in their chosen STEM major with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, the Gainesville State College Foundtion will provide them with full tuition and fee remission along with the $200 book scholarship for a maximum of four semesters.

The first STEM Scholarships will be awarded in the fall to 20 HOPE-eligible full-time first semester freshmen. Additional students will be selected each fall semester thereafter.

Students who are interested in applying for the STEM Scholarship should visit the Gainesville State College web site at www.gsc.edu/science/advisement to download the application form. The STEM Scholarship application deadline is Friday, April 21.
