Brown says workers have begun tearing down the building currently occupying the site across from the Mathis Drive entrance to Gainesville State College and behind Neighborhood Health Care. Brown says the company picked up its permits last week to go ahead with site preparation.
A company spokesman, Glenn Wilkens, has said it will take "ten months to a year" to build the store - and Wal-Mart hopes to have it open sometime next spring, employing about 350.
