GAINESVILLE - 'Tis the season for graduations - but one recently took place in Gainesville that you probably didn't even know was on tap.

Twenty-one people graduated recently from the 5th Gainesville Citizens' Government Academy. It's a ten-week program, designed to show participants the inner workings of city government.

And, as we reported three weeks ago, the city has begun enrolling students for the next citizens' police academy.

The nine-week program, designed to familiarize citizens with all areas of law enforcement administration and operations, will include classes on criminal procedures. Students will also participate in a patrol ride along. The course is taught by law enforcement officers who serve in the field every day.

Enrollment is open to all residents of Gainesville and Hall County who are 21 years or older and class size is limited to 25 students. Every applicant shall be subject to a criminal history background check and must have a clear criminal history (exceptions are minor traffic offenses).

Classes will be held on Thursdays from 7:30
