GAINESVILLE - Public tours of the new Hall County Detention Center are planned next week.

An open house will be held Thursday from 4:00-7:00, featuring guided tours of the new facility and its "state-of-the-art design and technology." The $54 million lock-up is the largest single capital project ever undertaken by Hall County government.

With 1,026 beds, the 230,000-square-foot facility on 50 acres on Barber Road includes a "core support center" connected to two housing towers, easily providing for future expansion, according to county officials.

Project planning began in 2003 as the Sheriff and his staff worked with the Board of Commissioners and consultants to research options for a new jail to replace the one on Main Street in Midtown.

Passage of SPLOST V in March 2004 provided sales-tax funding for the facility. Construction began in March 2006 and was completed on budget and ahead of schedule.
