GAINESVILLE - There have been new talks recently aimed at finding a new location for the regional welcome center now located on I-985 in Oakwood.

The Gainesville-Hall County Convention and Visitors Bureau is talking with the state Department of Transportation about potential sites along 985.

CVB President Stacey Dickson says one disadvantage to the current site is that it caters only to northbound traffic.

"So, we're looking at some sites that would give us access to the traffic coming both northbound and southbound," Dickson said in a recent interview. "We're going to the architects over the next couple of months to put something together for a potential site."

Dickson said they've been talking about a high-tech facility with about 3,000 square feet. That would be about four times the space they now have. But, Dickson says she and others envision the complex being more than just that.

"This project, as a whole, could end up being sort of a village concept," she said, "where there are several different entities happening at the same time."

The welcome center is now located in a single-wide mobile home and was opened at the site of an old rest area in 1996 in time for the Atlanta Olympics.

Dickson says though it has been updated over the years to even include wireless Internet service, it has long since needed replacing.
