GAINESVILLE - Gainesville is well on its way to meeting the state mandates for reducing water consumption.

The city's public utilities director, Kelly Randall, says there was a nine percent reduction in October and ten percent in November, adding, "and that's just incredible." And, Randall says December is off to a "remarkable" start.

"Our average (for December) is 14.67 (million gallons per day), over a million gallons below what our target is," Randall said Tuesday during a taping of Northeast Georgia This Week, which airs at 5:05 Saturday morning on WDUN NEWS TALK 550 (like AccessNorthGa.com, a division of Jacobs Media Corp.).

The city's goal is to reach a daily average of 15.81.

Randall said the city's consumption in October was about 17.3 million gallons per day and in November it was 15.89 million gallons per day.

Asked if it's an accurate portrayal to call the situation north Georgia is in a crisis, he said "yes, it is a crisis but it's a crisis we can get through and hopefully learn from."

Randall says the number of violators of the outdoor water ban has dropped dramatically since the city institute around-the-clock patrols. He says more than 1,000 letters have sent to first-time offenders since the total ban went into effect, about 30 for second offenses and "three or four" for a third violation.
