Green's Grocery still going strong

GAINESVILLE - In Gainesville there is a grocery store that looks and behaves as if it is the year 1950. It is one of three thriving Riverside Drive businesses, in operation a total of 145 years, that continue to fill a niche in town - long after the arrival of mega supermarkets and chain drug stores and restaurants.

And, all are still going strong.

Ed Waller runs Green's; he started working there when he was 14...nothing much has changed, including the concept of personal service.

" It just seemed like the right thing to do, Gainesville did not have any other store exactly like this and we just wanted to keep the tradition going, " Waller said.

Green's has its own butcher and butcher shop he cuts th steaks and chops to order .

Ladies bring in homemade cakes, .Green's still takes the groceries to your car if you ask, they still take phone in orders.

Waller knows the customers by name and they know him.

They come in to shop and catch up on neighborhood news, just like when Frank Green first opened 57 years ago.

Tuesday, we'll take you to the In Between Deli, a sandwich shop on Riverside Drive, where, like the Cheers bar on TV, you might say "everybody knows your name." The people behind the counter are so familiar with their customers and what they usually order that they start filling many of those orders as soon as they see them drive up.

Like Green's Grocery and Riverside Pharmacy, which we will profile on Wednesday, it's a longtime Riverside Drive landmark that continues to thrive.
