GAINESVILLE - Bids for a new round of downtown Gainesville landscaping range from "very high" to "very low."

City Council likes the low bid from Fred Pippin of Gainesville at $69,000. Assistant City Manager Tim Merritt says Pippin understands its a big job.

"Mr. Pippin is aware of the scope of the work and the details of the work."

The high bid was $162,000. Merritt said the work, which will include replacing several dying trees, will begin soon.

The project was approved by the city council in December.

Landscaper Mark Fockele drew up the greenspace plan which calls for expanding expand planting space in addition to brining in tougher, more resilient trees that can withstand the downtown environment.

"That's been one of the problems," Fockele said at the time. "This kind of environment is very difficult, it's very hot, there's very limited soil available for the trees. Some trees can tolerate those conditions and some cannot."
