ATLANTA - A Gainesville firm has been awarded the contract for the construction of a pedestrian bridge in Demorest.

The bridge is planned over Historic U.S. 441 on the Piedmont College campus.

State DOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl said the work will be done for $1.4. million by Cornett Bridge, Inc. of Gainesville. The project also includes a traffic signal at U.S. 441 and Georgia Avenue.

It is expected to be finished by the end of next June.

In addition, Linnenkohl says a contract has been let to a Seneca, S.C., company for the widening of five miles of the Toccoa ByPass in Stephens County. That will involve widening about five miles of the road to a four-lane divided highway between U.S. 129 and State Route Alternate 17. The $22.6 million contract was awarded to Thrift Development Corporation.

That project is expected to be finished by December 31, 2009.

Work on both projects is expected to begin late this summer or in the early fall.
